How to install a mouse

Click on the hyperlink for instructions for that step.

Read the Safety Procedures. Very Important!!!

There is two types of connectors for a mouse but 3 scenarios to connect

The connections are as follows

  1. PS2 Connection
  2. USB Connection
  3. Wireless

PS2 Connection

  1. Turn computer off.

  2. The mouse connector is usually green or have a picture of a mouse (not always the case).

  3. The port on the computer is usually green or have a picture of a mouse (not always the case)

  4. The connector will have an arrow or a mark to indicate the top of mouse. It either points up or to the side on the computer. It will only go in one direction.

  5. Some computers allow you to swap connectors with the keyboard. This is good for troubleshooting. If your mouse is not working, you can plug the keyboard in the mouse port to see if the port is working (not all systems allow that however).

USB Connection

  1. You can plug the USB connection while the system is on. USB is hot swappable.

  2. Most systems allow you to plug the mouse in any USB port in front or in back of system. There are systems that will not allow you to plug a USB mouse in the front however. Normally however you can plug it in any available USB slot.

Wireless Connection

  1. Wireless normally uses USB connection but can use a PS2 connection to plug the wireless receiver into.

  2. Each wireless device has it's own specifications on where the receiver is located in reference to the mouse. You will need to consult the manual for the specifics.

  3. You will need to make sure the mouse has good batteries in it.

  4. Most wireless mice have a button on it (usually on the bottom) that you push to activate it after you install the receiver. (Usually have to take a pen to push it)

  5. Sometimes wireless will not work in safe mode or during a re-install of the operating system. In that case, you may need to use a non wireless mouse.

Note: if you are replacing the mouse because of erratic movement and the mouse is a ball mouse and not a laser, the issue might be dirt. If you turn the mouse upside down. the cover rotates and the ball will come out. There are rollers. The rollers should be smooth. Lint gets stuck on the rollers and prevents the mouse from functioning properly. If you scrape the lint off and clean with alcohol, the issue should go away. If you do replace the mouse, it is best to replace with a laser to avoid this issue in the future.
