How to run Windows Update

Windows XP and older

To run Windows Update, do the following (some steps may or may not apply. Skip the step that does not apply for you)

  1. Open Windows Update (the hyperlink will open in a different window)
  2. Click Go (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)
   
  1. Click Start Now (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)
   
  1. Click Continue (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)
   
  1. Click the active X bar on top of Internet Explorer by the address bar (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)

  1. Click Install ActiveX Control (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)
 
  1. Click Install (You may see this the first time you run Windows Update or you may not see it)
   
  1. Click Check for Updates
   
  1. You have two options
    1. Express
      1. Will only show the critical updates
   
  1. Custom
    1. Will show additional updates that are optional (even though they are optional, some of these may be important. Too many variables here to give advice without knowing the update)
 

It is up to you to choose Express or Custom. You can still just select the recommended if you run the Custom.
