External drive naming

Manufacturers of external drives such as hard drives and USB drives, will give them a name so you can recognize it when you plug it in. For Example, all Western Digital names their external hard drives My Book as shown below.

You can change the name of the drive on your system to whatever you want. If you are using two drives from the same manufacturer, you will have to rename them. If you do not, the computer will get confused when it sees two My Books listed and you may only see one of them or none at all.

To rename the drive do the following

  1. Open My Computer or Computer (Hyperlink will open in a separate window)

  2. Right-click the drive you want to rename

  1. Click Rename

  1. Give the drive a unique name that is different from other drives (for example, my music, data storage)

  2. Press Enter
