HANCOCK, A.D.Age 83 years, died August 2, 2009 at his Nashville home. Preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Jane Elam Hancock. Survived by sons, Art Hancock, Steve (Linda) Hancock and Rob Hancock; and daughter, Vicki (Alan) Wright; grandchildren, Bradley, Meg and Jake Wright, and Wolfe Hancock; brothers, Pope (Evelyn) Hancock and Don (Ann) Hancock; and sister, Dorothy (Hugh) Johnson. Born April 23, 1926, A.D., a native of Robertson County, served in the US Navy during WWII as a radarman on the destroyer escort, USS Tomich. After the war, A.D. received his bachelor and master degrees from George Peabody College where he was a member of Phi Chi Alpha Fraternity. During his 42 year career, he served as Principal of Cumberland, Isaac Litton, Hume-Fogg, Hillwood and Hunters Lane High Schools. He served as the first principal of Hunters Lane from 1986-1992. He was selected as the first Secondary School Principal of the Year for the State of Tennessee in 1991. He served on the TSSAA Board of Control from 1974 until his retirement in 1992, serving as President for 3 years. After retirement, he was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. A.D. was an active member of the Civitan Club of Nashville and selected Civitan of the Year in 2003. He was a member of First Baptist Church Nashville and the Sojourners Sunday School Class. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 4, 2009 from 3-6 p.m., at First Baptist Church Nashville, and Wednesday, August 5, 2009 from 10-11 a.m., at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., at Spring Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Nashville, Belmont Mansion or TSSAA Hall of Champions.
