Doing a clean Windows XP install with an upgrade CD

This is the preferred method to reinstall the operating system

NOTICE:

 The procedures below require a repartitioning and reformatting of the hard drive. This will permanently erase all data on the drive. Please back up any data you wish to preserve before performing these procedures. During the procedure it will ask you for the product key. Have it handy to enter when it requests it. Some installs vary to a certain degree but all of them follow the following steps enough to be able to use this layout for all of them.

The process to do a clean install of Windows XP using an Upgrade CD is the same as using a Full version Windows XP but has only one additional step. After the license page, it will request the CD of the previous version.  This step is included in the instructions below. You can also review it here.

Due to the long process, the instructions are broken down to segments to make it easier to follow. Follow the following steps in order

  1. Decide how you want to delete the partition

  2. Create the partition

  3. Enter the Product Key

  4. Enter Date and Time

  5. Final Stage

  6. Installing drivers, updates and administrative tasks
