Delete CD-ROM Drives from Device Manager

If your drives are seen in Device Manager and not My Computer, you may just need to uninstall the drives and reinstall. This may work for other issues as well. To delete them and reinstall, do the following

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME

  1. Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
  2. Double-click on System
  3. Click on Device Manager
  4. Click the plus next to DVD\CD-ROM drives (May be listed different on your system)
  5. Highlight the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
  6. Hit the Delete key
  7. Say Yes
  8. Repeat steps 5 to 7 till all drives are gone.
  9. Reboot the computer
  10. If this doesn't work, reseat the cables to the drives including the power.

 

Windows 2000, Windows XP

  1. Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
  2. Double-click on System
  3. Click on Hardware
  4. Click on Device Manager
  5. Click the plus next to DVD\CD-ROM drives (May be listed different on your system)
  6. Highlight the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
  7. Hit the Delete key
  8. Say Yes
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 7 till all drives are gone.
  10. Reboot the computer
  11. If this doesn't fix the issue Try deleting the Upper and Lower Filters (WinXP only)
  12. If this doesn't work, reseat the cables to the drives including the power.
