Delete Hard Drives from Device Manager
If your drives are seen in Device Manager and not My Computer, you may just need to uninstall the drives and reinstall. This may work for other issues as well. To delete them and reinstall, do the following
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME
- Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
- Double-click on System
- Click on Device Manager
- Click the plus next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (May be listed different on your system)
- Highlight the Primary IDE Channel
- Hit the Delete key
- Say Yes
- Repeat steps 4 to 6 till all controllers are gone.
- Click the plus next to Disk drives (May be listed different on your system)
- Highlight the hard drive
- Hit the Delete key
- Say Yes
- Repeat steps 9 to 12 till all Drives are gone.
- Reboot the computer
- If this doesn't work, reseat the cables to the drives including the power.
Windows 2000, Windows XP
- Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
- Double-click on System
- Click on Hardware
- Click on Device Manager
- Click the plus next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (May be listed different on your system)
- Highlight the Primary IDE Channel
- Hit the Delete key
- Say Yes
- Repeat steps 5 to 8 till all controllers are gone.
- Click the plus next to Disk drives (May be listed different on your system)
- Highlight the hard drive
- Hit the Delete key
- Say Yes
- Repeat steps 10 to 13 till all Drives are gone.
- Reboot the computer
- If this doesn't work, reseat the cables to the drives including the power.
