Upgrading USB
Older systems have USB 1.1 ports. You can use 2.0 USB in these ports but the 2.0 will only operate at the 1.1 speed. You will get a message to the fact that you loose some of the speed because of it. You can upgrade to 2.0 by adding a 2.0 card into your system. It will go into one of your PCI slots. However, you will also have the 1.1 ports as well. There is no way to replace the 1.1 with 2.0 because the ports are on the motherboard. You would have to replace the entire motherboard to upgrade the ports. Depending on the system, it may be cheaper to get a new system than to upgrade the motherboard. You can add the 2.0 ports by installing a PCI USB card though, but in order to replace the 1.1 ports, you would have to replace the motherboard.
