Password reset disk
If you are going to use a password on the welcome screen, it is very important to create a password reset disk. If you forget your password and you do not have one, there is not a way to get around the password unless you get a password cracking utility. Unfortunately, that is not recommended due to legal reasons and no way to determine if it is safe to use.
To create a password reset disk, follow these steps.
- Go to User Accounts (This link will open in a different window)
- Click on the account that you want to create a password disk.
- Click Prevent a forgotten password which starts the Forgotten Password Wizard. This is found under Related Tasks.
-
Insert a blank, formatted disk into drive A, and click Next.
- Enter the password in the Current user account password box.
NOTE: Be sure to store the disk in a safe place and where others will not find it. Anyone that has access to that disk will be able to bypass your password.
To use the disk to reset the password, do the following...
- Click on the user name whose password is on the recover disk.
- Click the question mark button, this causes the "Did you forget your password message" to appear.
- Click use your password reset disk. This will start the Password Reset Wizard.
