Notes

  • USB connections on a cable modem allows you to connect the cable modem to the system while the system is turned on.
  • Ethernet cable connection requires you to turn the system off to connect it. This includes turning the modem on. Sometimes the system will not recognize the connection till you reboot.
  • Connecting the cable modem via USB sometimes require you to install an additional driver for the cable modem.
  • Connecting the cable modem via Ethernet does not require an additional driver.
  • Sometimes the modem requires an extra driver for the USB but does not indicate it. There may be no errors given. If you are using it via USB and can't get a connection, check the manufacturer on how to install the driver.
  • There are techs that say people have issues with cable modems via a USB connection. I haven't witnessed it so I can't say it is true or not.  Just mentioning it in case you are having an issue and you can check to see if the USB is the cause.

Should you turn modem off when you are not using it?

  • Leaving the cable modem and router on does consume electricity but I don't think it will make a big difference in your bill. (I haven't gauged it so I don't know)
  • Security is affected, As long as it is on, you can be invaded. This is why it is very important to keep windows up to date, anti-virus up to date, and have at least two anti-spyware programs on your computer.  Click here for more information
  • Turning the modem off when your not using it, will keep someone from invading your system while you are away. However if they do want to get in your system, they can when you are at the system as well. There is a debate on if you should leave it on while you are away. My opinion is that if you leave it on, your no more at risk than if you turn it off. If they want in and have a way in, they will. I don't think turning it off will stop it.
