Prevent MSN Messenger from starting

To prevent MSN messenger from starting either remove it from Add/Remove programs (after enabling it in add/Remove program) or delete the registry key. To delete the registry key do the following.
- Click Start
- Click on Run
- Type REGEDIT
- Click on OK
- Double-click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- Double-click on Software
- Double-click on Microsoft
- Double-click on Windows
- Double-click on CurrentVersion
- Double-click on Run
- Highlight MsnMsgr (on the right pane)
- Hit the Delete key
- Say Yes
- Reboot the computer

To prevent Windows Messenger from running, use the method appropriate for your version of Windows Messenger and your version of Windows.
- Windows Messenger 4.0 or later versions on a Windows XP Professional-based computer
- Windows Messenger 4.0 on a Windows XP Home Edition-based computer
- Windows Messenger 4.5 or later versions on a Windows XP Home Edition-based computer or on a Windows XP Professional-based computer

Use the Group Policy (gpedit.msc) snap-in to turn on the Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run option.
Notes
- To use the Group Policy snap-in, you must be logged on to the computer using an account that has administrator permissions.
- This method prevents programs that use the Messenger APIs from using Windows Messenger. Microsoft Outlook 2002, Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and the Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP are examples of programs that use these APIs and that depend on Windows Messenger.
To turn on the Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run option, follow these steps:
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type gpedit.msc
- Click OK
- In Group Policy, expand Local Computer Policy
- Expand Computer Configuration
- Expand Administrative Templates
- Expand Windows Components
- Expand Windows Messenger
- Double-click Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run
- Click Enabled
- Click OK
- Click on File
- Click Exit
Windows Messenger 4.0 on a Windows XP Home Edition-based computer
NOTE: This method does not prevent users from
manually running Windows Messenger, but it does prevent Windows
Messenger from running automatically every time that you start
Windows.
Change the preferences in Windows Messenger. To do this, follow
these steps.
- Start Windows Messenger
- Click on Tools
- Click Options
- Click preferences tab
- Click to clear the Run this program when Windows starts
- Click OK
If you use Outlook Express or Outlook 2002, Windows Messenger may start automatically every time that you run Outlook Express or Outlook. To prevent Windows Messenger from starting automatically, follow these steps:
Outlook Express
- Click Tools
- Click Options
- click the General tab
- Click to clear the Automatically log on to Windows Messenger
- Click OK
- Click Tools
- Click Options
- Click Other tab
- Click to clear the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook
- Click OK
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may
cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your
operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.
Note This method prevents programs that use the Messenger
APIs from using Windows Messenger. Outlook 2002, Outlook Express 6,

- Click Start

- Double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

- Click Key
- Type Messenger
- Press Enter
- Double-click Messenger
- Click Edit
- Click New
- Click Key
- Type Client
- Press Enter
- Double-click Client
- Click Edit
- Click New
- Click DWORD Value
- Type PreventRun
- Press Enter
- Right click PreventRun
- Click Modify
- In the Value data box, type 1
- Click OK
- Quit Registry Editor
