SUMMARY
MORE INFORMATION
Windows XP or Windows XP SP1
The Exchange System Management Tools component requires the Windows XP Internet Information Services snap-in and the SMTP snap-in to be installed. In Windows XP and in Windows XP SP1, the SMTP snap-in is installed only with the SMTP Service. The SMTP Service requires the WWW Publishing Service be installed. The Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack is also required, because it provides the NNTP snap-in and the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.In summary, the prerequisites are the following:
- Internet Information Services (IIS) snap-in.
- SMTP Service. For security purposes, you can disable this service after installation, because only the SMTP snap-in is required.
- WWW Publishing Service. The SMTP Service requires this service. For security purposes, the WWW Publishing Service can disabled after installation)
- Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack
Windows XP SP2
In Windows XP SP2, the SMTP snap-in is now installed with the IIS snap-in. The SMTP Service is a separate component that is not required. The WWW Publishing Service is also not required. The Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack is still required, because it provides the NNTP snap-in and the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.In summary, the prerequisites in Windows XP SP2 are the following:
- IIS snap-in
- Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack

Known Issues
"No such interface supported" error message when you try to remotely manage an Exchange Server 2003 computer
After you install the Exchange System Management Tools on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2, if you try to remotely manage a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer by using the SMTP node under the Protocols node in Exchange System Manager, you may receive the following error message:- IIS Manager is installed without the SMTP Service on a computer that is running Windows XP Professional.
- The computer is upgraded to Windows XP SP2.
Cause
The SMTP snap-in is installed automatically when you install IIS Manager on a computer that is running Windows XP SP2. When you install Exchange System Management Tools on a computer that is running Windows XP, the Setup program assumes that the SMTP snap-in is installed if IIS Manager is installed. However, in Windows XP SP1 and in earlier versions of Windows XP, the SMTP snap-in is installed only with the SMTP Service. If the computer is upgraded to Windows XP SP2, and if the SMTP Service component is not already installed, the SMTP snap-in is not present.Resolution
To resolve this issue, remove IIS Manager, and then reinstall IIS Manager. To do this, follow these steps:- Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs
- Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Under Components, click Internet Information Services (IIS). Do not click to select or to clear the check box. Instead, click Internet Information Services (IIS) so that the whole item is selected (appears shaded).
- Click Details.
- In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) area, click to clear the check boxes next to the Common Files and Internet Information Services Snap-In components
- Click OK. You may be prompted to remove other components.
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Under Components, click Internet Information Services (IIS). Do not click to select or to clear the check box.
- Click Details.
- In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) box, click select the check boxes next to the Common Files, Internet Information Services Snap-In, and any other components
- Click OK
- click Next
- Click Finish
- Close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box.
By default, the SMTP snap-in is installed when you install IIS Manager. By default, the SMTP Service is not automatically installed.
