Messages from someone not on your friends list

When you get a private message from someone that is on your friends list it will show up here with a red number so you know you have a new message waiting

When you see that, you know to click on it to see who sent you a message and what they said.
However, sometimes a nonfriend that is not on your friends list will send you an email. If they have never communicated with before, it will show up under messages on the left hand side of Facebook under Messenger.

However it does not show that you have a new message waiting there. It does not give the red number on it. The only way you will find out there is a message there is if you open it up.
I am bad about checking that area for messages and I miss messages that I need to see. For many people, they may never get a message they are concerned about. However if you are an admin of a group, a member of the group that is not on your friends list may message you and it will go here.
So check this section periodically. I wish Facebook would change this so you get notified.
I do not have Messenger on my cell so I cannot tell you if it works the same way on the cell or not.
