Privacy Statement Scam

There is different versions of the privacy statement getting passed around Facebook. They are not valid. They have been going around Facebook for a long time.

There is no way to guarantee your pictures, documents or anything on your page is safe from being stolen. If you share it, it is no longer private. Here are a few ways a person can get a copy of your pictures and documents without your knowledge or permission. Click the hyperlink for more information.

Additional information

Facebook's Download Option

You can use the download option in Facebook. You just open the picture and there is a download feature. You can download the photos from there. More information on this can be found by clicking here.

Snipping Tool

Anyone that is able to see the photo or information on your page can use the Snipping Tool. The Snipping Tool is a feature that comes with Windows. It is available on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. There is also 3rd party software that does the same thing.

The tool takes a snapshot of the screen and you can save the snapshot as a picture. It will be saved on your computer so you now have a copy of the picture or article that is on Facebook. You do not have to get permission to do this (if it is legal or not is a separate question) Even if Facebook allows you to disable the download feature, they can still get a copy of it. For more information on the Snipping Tool, click here.

Print Screen Key

You can use the Print Screen key on the keyboard to take a snapshot of the screen and then you can paste it in a program like Paint to edit it.

Can you determine who steals my information

The answer is yes and no. If the person downloads it for their own copy, the answer is no. There is no way to know who made a copy of it.  If they share it on the internet, try to sell it, or some other form, yes to a certain degree. If no one else stole it or shared it, you would know the person is the culprit. The problem with that is figuring out if the person is the original one that took it.  You also would need the item copyrighted so you can prove it belongs to you. You probably can prove it is yours but without the copyright, it would be much harder.

Examples of the false posts going around

Example One

Now it's official! It has been published in the media. Facebook has just released the entry price: $5.99 to keep the subscription of your status to be set to "private". If you paste this message on your page, it will be offered free (paste not share) if not tomorrow, all your posts can become public. Even the messages that have been deleted or the photos not allowed. After all, it does not cost anything for a simple copy and paste
