2.5 external hard drive enclosures  

 

   

Advantages of using an external hard drive

The cost to buy one of these is between $5 to $30

Installing a hard drive into an enclosure is easy to do. Follow these steps (The instructions may not be exact for your model but it will be close enough to assist you with removing the hard drive and inserting it in the enclosure)

  1. There is two types drives

    1. ATA

    2. SATA

  2. Determine the type you have and make sure the enclosure has the right connections. Click here to find out what type of drive you have

  3. Unplug the Laptop

   
  1. Remove the battery

   
  1. Push and hold the power button for 3 seconds to drain any stored power

  2. Flip the laptop upside down

  3. determine where your hard drive is located (it is located in different areas depending on the model)

  4. Remove the screws to the cover of the hard drive.

   
  1. Remove the screws holding the hard drive down (some laptops don't use screws so if yours don't, skip this step)

   
  1. Grab the tab and gently slide hard drive to disconnect it

   
  1. Remove the bracket the hard drive sits in

   
  1. Slide the drive into the enclosure

  2. Put the cover on the enclosure (some require screws to hold the cover in place)

   
  1. Plug the cable into the enclosure

   
  1. The cable has two USB connectors (may not be the case in some but most have them). Plug both into USB ports on your system
