2.5 External HD Enclosure

Advantage of using an external hard drive

Installing a hard drive into an enclosure is easy to do. Follow these steps (The enclosure you are using may have a different install procedure than what I have listed here. Also if you are removing the hard drive from a laptop, the procedure of removing the drive may be different for your laptop)

  1. There is two types of drives
  2. ATA (IDE)
  3. SATA
  4. Determine the type you have and make sure the enclosure has the right connections. Click here to find out what type of drive you have
  5. Unplug the Laptop

  1. Remove the battery

  1. Push and hold the power button for 3 seconds to drain any stored power.
  2. Flip the laptop upside down

  3. Determine where your hard drive is located (It is located in different areas depending on the model. Consult the manufacture for instructions on removing hard drive)
  4. Once you have it out of the laptop, remove the bracket the hard drive sits in.

  1. Slide the drive into the enclosure (Be sure to slide it in the correct orientation)
  2. Put the cover on the enclosure (some require screws to hold the cover in place)

  1. Plug the cable into the enclosure

  1. Some cables have two USB connectors. If they do, plug both into USB ports
  2. If the enclosure has its own power source, plug it in.
