2.5 External HD Enclosure
Advantage of using an external hard drive
Installing a hard drive into an enclosure is easy to do. Follow these steps (The enclosure you are using may have a different install procedure than what I have listed here. Also if you are removing the hard drive from a laptop, the procedure of removing the drive may be different for your laptop)
- There is two types of drives
- ATA (IDE)
- SATA
- Determine the type you have and make sure the enclosure has the right connections. Click here to find out what type of drive you have
- Unplug the Laptop
|
- Remove the battery
|
- Push and hold the power button for 3 seconds to drain any stored power.
-
Flip the laptop upside down
- Determine where your hard drive is located (It is located in different areas depending on the model. Consult the manufacture for instructions on removing hard drive)
- Once you have it out of the laptop, remove the bracket the hard drive sits in.
|
- Slide the drive into the enclosure (Be sure to slide it in the correct orientation)
- Put the cover on the enclosure (some require screws to hold the cover in place)
|
- Plug the cable into the enclosure
|
- Some cables have two USB connectors. If they do, plug both into USB ports
- If the enclosure has its own power source, plug it in.
