SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to publish a FrontPage Web to a compact disc-recordable (CD-R) or a compact disc-rewritable (CD-RW).

If your computer is equipped with a CD recorder, you can back up a FrontPage Web to a CD. You may find it convenient to use a compact disc (CD) to back up or transfer a large Web.

Many CD recorders allow you to prepare a CD-R or a CD-RW so that you can copy files directly to the recorder by using a drive letter, in the same way that you copy files to a hard drive, floppy disk, or removable drive. You can then use FrontPage to publish a Web to the CD. Or, you can publish the Web to your hard disk first, and then use a CD recording program to copy the hard-disk version to the CD.

IMPORTANT: If you are using a CD-R drive and CD-ROM, you can copy or publish specific files to a particular folder only one time. If you use this type of drive and media, you need to copy or publish your Web to a different folder on the CD-ROM.

Prepare a CD-R or a CD-RW for Direct File Copying

1. Insert a CD-R or a CD-RW into your CD recorder.
2. Start your CD recording program, and then format the CD so that you can read and write to the CD by using a drive letter. See the documentation that came with your CD recording software for more information about how to do this.

Microsoft Windows XP allows you to save information such as photos and software to a compact disc CD without using third-party software. However, you need additional software to create a disk-based Web on a recordable CD or publish a Web directly to a recordable CD by using a drive letter. This is because Windows XP does not support packet writing, which is required to write and delete individual files on a recordable CD.

Publish to a Disk-Based Web and Copy to CD

You can use the Publish command to create a disk-based copy of a Web, and then use a CD recording program to copy the disk-based version to the CD. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start FrontPage, and then open your Web.
2. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
3. In the Publish Destination dialog box, do one of the following:
   
    
   • Type the path to a folder on your hard disk (for example, drive letter:\My Website).
     
     -or-
   • Click Browse to locate a folder.

   NOTE: If you previously chose a publish destination for this Web site, the Publish Destination dialog box does not appear. Proceed to step 5.

4. Click OK.
5. Specify the pages that you want to publish. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. In the Publish Web dialog box, click Options in the lower-left corner.
   2. Click the Publish tab, and then do one or more of the following:
      • Under Publish, specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed or all pages.
      • Under Changes, specify how you want FrontPage to determine which pages have been changed.
      • If you want to create a log file for changes that are made during publishing, select that check box.
   3. Click OK.
6. To publish subwebs, click to select the Include subwebs check box.
7. Click Publish.
   
   NOTE: If you cancel publishing in the middle of the operation, files that have already been published remain on the destination folder.
8. Start your CD recording program, and then copy the Web to a recordable CD. You may also be able to use Windows Explorer to copy the Web to a recordable CD, depending on the software that you are using. See the documentation that came with your CD recording software for more information about how to perform these steps.

Publish a Web Directly to a CD-ROM

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start FrontPage, and then open your Web.
2. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
3. In the Publish Destination dialog box, do one of the following:
   
    
   • Type the path to a folder on your hard disk (for example, drive letter:\My Website).
     
     -or-
   • Click Browse to locate a folder.

   NOTE: If you previously chose a publish destination for this Web site, the Publish Destination dialog box does not appear. Proceed to step 4.

4. Click OK.
5. Specify the pages that you want to publish. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. In the Publish Web dialog box, click Options in the lower left corner.
   2. Click the Publish tab, and then do one or more of the following.
      • Under Publish, specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed, or all pages.
      • Under Changes, specify how you want FrontPage to determine which pages have been changed.
      • If you want to create a log file for changes that are made during publishing, select that check box.
   3. Click OK.
6. To publish subwebs, click to select the Include subwebs check box.
7. Click Publish.
   
   NOTE: If you cancel publishing in the middle of the operation, files that have already been published remain in the destination folder.
8. After you have published your Web to the CD, you may want to close the CD, depending on how you want to read the CD in the future and depending on the software that you are using. You typically have the following three choices:
   • Eject the CD from the CD recorder without making any changes. This allows you to read and write to the CD by using a drive letter when you reinsert the CD into your CD recorder.
     
     NOTE: Standard CD-ROM drives may not be able to read the CD when you do this.
   • Close the CD so that it can be read with a standard CD-ROM drive after a UDF reader is installed.
   • Close the CD so it can be read in most standard CD-ROM drives without having to install a UDF reader. This option usually also allows you to "finalize" the CD so that it cannot be erased or overwritten.

Publish a Disk-Based Web from a CD

You can use FrontPage to open a disk-based Web on a CD, and then publish the Web to the Internet, an intranet, or a disk-based Web.

1. Insert the CD that contains your Web into your CD recorder.
2. Start FrontPage, and then open your Web (on the CD).
3. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
4. In the Publish Destination dialog box, type the URL to your publish location, or the path to a folder on your hard disk, or click Browse to locate a folder.
   
   NOTE: If you have previously chosen a publish destination for this Web site, the Publish Destination dialog box does not appear. Proceed to step 5.
5. Click OK.
6. Specify the pages that you want to publish. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. In the Publish Web dialog box, click Options in the lower left corner.
   2. Click the Publish tab, and do one or more of the following:
      • Under Publish, specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed, or all pages.
      • Under Changes, specify how you want FrontPage to determine which pages have been changed.
      • If you want to create a log file for changes that are made during publishing, select that check box.
   3. Click OK.
7. To publish subwebs, click to select the Include subwebs check box.

Copy a Disk-Based Web From a CD to a Hard Disk

When you copy a disk-based Web from a CD to a hard disk, you may need to remove the Read-only attributes in order to make any changes to the Web.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
 

1. Insert the CD that contains your Web into your CD recorder.
2. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
3. Use a drag-and-drop operation to copy the Web from your CD to a folder on your hard disk.
4. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
5. On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click to clear the Hide file extension for known file types check box.
6. Click OK.
7. In the Folders list, double-click the folder on the hard drive that contains your Web.
8. Double-click the _vti_pvt folder.
9. Delete any files that end with .lck.
   
   NOTE: You may need to perform the following additional steps only if you are copying a published Web:
10. Right-click the Service file, and then click Properties.
11. Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK.
12. Right-click the Services file, and then click Properties.
13. Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK.

TROUBLESHOOTING

• When you attempt to save changes that are made to a Web on your hard disk, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
   
  Cannot open file ...\_vti_pvt\service.lck for writing.

  This behavior occurs when the Web is opened or copied from a CD-ROM, because the .lck files are marked as read-only.
  
  To resolve this and other issues with read-only files, follow these steps.
  
  NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  
  NOTE: You cannot perform these steps on a CD-R because you cannot remove the Read Only setting from files on a CD-R. You can, however, remove the Read Only setting from files on a CD-RW.
  
   

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click to clear the Hide file extension for known file types check box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Folders list, double-click the folder that contains your Web.
  6. Double-click the _vti_pvt folder.
  7. Delete any files that end with .lck.
  8. Right-click the Service file, and then click Properties.
  9. Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK.
  10. Right-click the Services file, and then click Properties.
  11. Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK.

• Hyperlinks in a Web that you have copied to a CD may not function as expected: The browser may be unable to connect to the Web pages referred to by the hyperlinks.
  
  This behavior can occur if the hyperlinks contain absolute references that refer to files that reside on the local computer on which the Web was created.
  
  To resolve this issue, edit the Web to replace any absolute hyperlink addresses with relative hyperlink addresses. For additional information, click the link below to view the article.:

   

   

• When you preview a Web page that contains a FrontPage component (by clicking the Preview tab at the bottom of the FrontPage window or by clicking Preview In Browser on the Standard toolbar), you may receive the following message:
   
  This page contains elements that may need to be saved or published to display properly.

  FrontPage components that interact with a Web server will not function when you create a disk-based FrontPage Web. Browse-time components will only function when you use a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server on which you have installed the FrontPage Server Extensions. • When you attempt to publish a Web to a CD that already contains a copy of the Web, you receive an error message similar to the following:
   
  Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?

  You may also receive a message from your CD recording software that there is not enough free space on the CD to copy your files.
  
  This behavior can occur if the recordable CD does not contain enough free space to copy newer versions of files from the updated Web. When you use "packet writing" software that allows you to read and write to the CD by using a drive letter, you can only write to each part of the disc once. When you copy an updated Web to the CD, older versions of files are not actually deleted from the CD, and so newer versions of files require additional space. This behavior is due to limitations with CD recorder technology.
  
  To work around this behavior, publish your Web to a new, blank CD.
