SYMPTOMS

When you preview a web page that contains a FrontPage component (by clicking the Preview tab at the bottom of the FrontPage window or by clicking Preview In Browser on the Standard toolbar), you may receive the following message:

This page contains elements that may need to be saved or published to display properly.

CAUSE

FrontPage components that interact with a Web server will not function when you create a disk-based FrontPage Web. Browse-time components will only function when you use a HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server on which you have installed the FrontPage Server Extensions.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: If you have pages with an ASP file extension

Publish Active Server Pages on one of the following server configurations:

  • Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95.
  • Peer Web Services for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server for Windows NT 4 Server.
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server for Windows 2000.

Method 2: If you are using browse-time components

You can enable FrontPage browse-time components by publishing your disk-based Web to an HTTP server.

Determining Whether You Are Using a Disk-based Web or Server-based Web

To determine whether you have a disk-based Web or a server-based Web, open your Web in FrontPage and look at the title bar. If the title of your Web contains a drive letter and one or more backslashes, similar to the following, you have a disk-based web:

c:\myweb

If the title of your Web contains "http" and forward slashes, similar to the following, you have a server-based web:

http://myweb

NOTE: The alert described in the summary section will always be shown if you are looking at the Preview tab, regardless of whether or not the web is on a web server.
