If you are driving on a road in an isolated area and you have car trouble, you could be there for awhile waiting on assistance. While you are waiting there, you are vulnerable if the wrong person comes along.

if the weather is not too cold where it would cause harm, it is best to exit the vehicle and go into the woods or some place where you can see the vehicle but be concealed. This way you can see who approaches the vehicle. You can then make a decision if you trust the person or not. The person won't know your hiding. The person will think the vehicle is abandoned. If you don't feel safe letting the person know you are there, you can remain silent.
The car will not keep you safe. It doesn't take much to bust the window and be able to pull you out. By hiding, you stand a better chance of being safe.
