Folder options File view
To adjust the settings for Files and Folders
- Go to control panel (This link will open in a different window)
- Double-click on Folder Options
General Tab
To adjust how Tasks are shown, how folders are browsed and to single click or Double-click on items.
View Tab
Allows you to adjust settings for files and folders. Below is a short list of items you can adjust on files and folders.
- To view contents of System Folders, uncheck Display the contents of system folders
- To display hidden files and folders put the dot in Do not show hidden files and folders.
- Windows automatically hides the file extensions. If you want to unhide them, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
- Windows hides protected operating system files. Unless you need to alter them, it is recommended that you leave it checked. If you do want to view them, uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
File Types
Here you can adjust what program opens what file extensions.
Example: If you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer and you open a .doc file, Microsoft Word will open to view it. If a program is not associated with a file extension, it will ask you what program you want to use to view that file.
Offline Files
Allows you to work with files and programs stored on the network even when you are not connected.
Different views of Windows
This is for Windows Explorer, My Computer and various other windows.
- Thumbnails - allows you to preview the file (good for pictures)
- Tiles - aligns the files up and down.
- Icons - displays the files as icons.
- List - displays the files as a List
- Details - Displays the files as a List but also gives details on the file, such as size, Type and Date Modified.
To access the different views, click on View on the menu bar. (the choice you make should remain till you choose a different option)
