Share a file

Windows 10

To share a file over the network, you have to let the network know you want to share the file. In general, you should not have to share the C drive to share a folder that is inside the C drive. However, sometimes you have to share the C drive in order to access a folder inside of C. As general practice, I always share C drive to avoid the hassle.

In order to share a file, Both computers have to be on the same network.

To share a file over the network, do the following

  1.  Open Windows Explorer (Click hyperlink for instructions)

  2. Click on This PC

  1. Right-click Local Disk (C:)

  1. Place arrow over Share with

  1. Click Advanced Sharing...

  1. Click the Sharing tab

  1. Click Advaned Sharing

  1. Advanced sharing window appears

  1. Click Permissions

  1. If you want to allow someone over the network to Change and Read a file on this system, place a check on Full Control, otherwise, choose the option you want

  1. Click Apply

  1. Reboot the computer

Repeat steps 1 through 12 above to share the folder that you want to share.

NOTE: as a general rule you cannot edit a file in two locations at the same time. In order to edit the file at one location, you have to close it in the other location. There are some programs that will allow you to have it open in two different locations but not all programs will.
