How to Delete all system restore points
Windows 7
Warning!!!
Deleting all restore points on the system will leave you vulnerable to not being able to recover from a system crash. If your system crashes and there is no points, you may have to get more aggressive in fixing the computer which may include reinstalling Windows. If possible, it is recommended to back up your important files before you proceed.
Note: with older versions of Windows such as Windows ME and Windows XP, there was an issue with restore points and a virus
-
If the computer had a virus when the computer made the restore point, the virus will be in the restore point as well
-
Windows prevents the restore point from getting altered to keep it available to use. Therefore if there is a virus in the restore point, anti-virus and anti-spyware software will not see it. The software will report no virus found
-
However the virus can re-infect the system from the restore point.
The issue with the restore point protecting the virus existed with Windows ME and Windows XP. I do not know if it is the same way with the newer Windows. My assumption though is that it is still the case.
You talk to some technicians and they will tell you it is not a good idea to delete them to scan the system and leave them enabled. Others will tell you to delete them.
