Router connections

Most routers have the capability to connect network cable (such as cat5 cable) from the computer to the router. Even most of the wireless routers have connections to connect the router to the computer via cable instead of wireless if desired.

On most routers, it doesn't matter what order or plug the cables are plugged into that comes from the computers.

There is one connector that is not designed for the cables that go from the system to the router. This connector is designed for the DSL modem or cable modem. The modem cannot be plugged into any of the other connectors but this one. The problem with this is that the connector is the same as all the other connectors but serve a different purpose than the others.  You will need to check the manual of the router to find out which connector is for the modem. The connector may be labeled so look at the router and see if it is labeled.

You will also need to make sure you use the correct cables for the router. There is Cat 5 cable, Cat 6 cable, crossover cable, straight cable, and other cables. You will need to make sure you use the right cables. Click here for information on cables.
