RTC Jumper removal

Read the Safety Procedures. Very Important!!!

The RTC jumper is used in the event you are having an issue with P.O.S.T. or some other issue that you suspect the motherboard is involved. Sometimes this can cause the motherboard to fail. I don't know if this procedure is what causes it or the motherboard was in the process of failing when the procedure was ran and the procedure made the failure appear. It is a good tool but only use it as needed.

Not all motherboards have this jumper. It does the same thing as removing the battery. It resets the motherboard. This can harm the system if done incorrectly. There is two different methods of moving the jumper. There is usually three pins Pins 1 2 and 3. You will need to check the manufacturer to determine which pins the caps are set on by default. For explanation purposes, pins 1 and 2 are going to be the default. Below is the two methods

Warning! Not following these procedures correctly can cause damage to your system. These directions are not designed to replace a qualified technician. The directions may not completely match the setup of your system due to the numerous variations of computer setups available in the market. If you not sure how to follow these directions then please consult a technician to help you. UpgradeNRepair and its representatives are not responsible for any damage.

SAFETY NOTE: Do not go in the system while any cables including power cord is connected to the system. Also drain any power to the system by pushing the power button with the power cord disconnected.

SAFETY NOTE: When you open the system, you may see dust in the system. Do not blow on it. Your breath has moisture and electronics hate moisture.

  1. Disconnect all cables from back of the system (This includes the power cord) Make sure there is no cables connected (can't stress that enough)
  2. With the power cord disconnected push the power button (to discharge power). PUSH THE POWER BUTTON WITH THE POWER CORD DISCONNECTED!
  3. Remove the computer cover. (Consult the computer manual or manufacturer for the procedure to remove the cover.)
  4. Move the jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3.
  5. Leave the jumper on pins 2 and 3 for 30 seconds.
  6. Remove jumper and place it back on pins 1 and 2.
  7. Close the computer case
  8. Reconnect cables

  10. May have to reset the BIOS.

WARNING! If method two is done on a system that requires method one, method two will damage the motherboard!!! Consult the manufacturer to see which procedure your motherboard requires.
