Online Security

There is so many dangers on the internet. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself.

  1. Download and install all windows updates
  2. Install an anti-virus software such as Norton, Mcafee, PCillian, AVG, or other anti-virus software. (Be careful. There is software on the internet that claims to be anti-virus or anti-spyware that is not and will infect your system)
  3. Make sure your anti-virus is up to date on the updates. Most programs will check for updates on their own but still check for updates manually (the auto updates usually only do the critical updates but doesn't do the minor ones. You need them as well)
  4. Run at least two anti-spyware programs.
  5. Be careful of any attachments (even if they come from a good source). Run a virus scan on the attachment. If you have a computer that has no important information on it, open the attachment on that system. If you see its safe then open it.
  6. Be careful of scams. Banks and internet providers will not email you about your account information or problems with your account. If you get an email, do not follow the instructions in the email. Call your bank or internet provider on a phone number that you have (not the phone number that is the email)
  7. Run a scan with your anti-virus and anti-spyware once a week.
