Router MAC filtering

MAC filtering is used in wireless router setup.  Each network card has its own MAC address. It is like a signature. The MAC address is built into the card. Advantage of this is that it adds security to a wireless router.

You can turn on MAC addressing on the router. When you turn on MAC addressing, you enter the network cards MAC address of each computer you want to have access to the network in the allow list. When the computer tries to access the network, the router checks the MAC address of that computer with the MAC address that is listed in the allow list. If it is listed there, the router will allow the computer access to the network and internet. If it is not listed than it won't have access.

NOTE: This does not guarantee that your network is safe. Networks has been hacked with MAC filtering turned on but it does add security. Any security feature can be broken. Even though it can be broken, still be good to have it installed.

To get the MAC address of the computer, use IPCONFIG. The physical address listed in IPCONFIG is the MAC address. It may have more than one physical address if there is more than one network card installed. To get help with IPCONFIG, click here.
