Router setup tips

Here is some tips on setting up the router.

  1. Change the router name to something unique so when you see it listed in a report, you will know it is your router and not someone else's.
  2. Change the SSID to a name you will recognize and not the default setting.
  3. For wireless security, turn on WEP and create a key that others will not guess.
  4. For added wireless security, enable MAC filter (This requires you to enter the Mac address of the system you want to allow)
  5. When you are trying to connect to the router wirelessly, make sure the router you are connecting to is yours and not your neighbors. If your neighbors is unsecure, you will be able to connect to it, which will make his slower. Also depending on the range your connection may be slower.
  6. Make sure your router is set to the correct band. If your network cards only accept a certain band, you will need to make sure your routers are on that band as well.

On wireless security, if an intruder does want to access your system, the intruder can get passed WEP and MAC filtering. However with both turned on and a firewall, the system will be more secure than nothing installed. Wireless routers are connected at first unsecure. You have to set it up.
