Get automatically added to groups

At one time, when you created a group in Facebook, people were not automatically added. When you selected someone, they would get an email stating that you requested them to join the group. As in everything else, Facebook changed that feature.

Now it does not ask you if you want to join or not. If a person selects you to be in their group, you are automatically selected. You don't have a say in the issue.

This may not sound like a big issue but it can. You can be a member of a group and not even know it. That group may not be a group you want to associate with.

The best way to explain is to use an example. This may not be a good example but it gets my point across. This situation is made up but it could happen.

John is a pastor of a church. He has a Facebook page and he uses it to reach out to potential members of his church.

Steve is not a Christian but he is a friend of John. Steve is a member of a devil worshipping cult. Steve created a group honoring the devil. He adds John to the devil worshipping group. John doesn't realize he is in the group because he didn't get a notice that he was added to the group.

The group is automatically added when Steve added John. It will show up on the list of groups.

John (like everyone else) doesn't look at the list closely because it is his list and automatically assumes he knows what groups he is in, so he doesn't realize that he is a member of the devil worshipping group.

Now some potential members of his church checks out his page to see what kind of person he is and sees the devil worshipping group. They won't know he is unaware of it. They are going to think he worships the devil and stays away from the church.

Facebook should not automatically add people to groups for this reason. If someone wants you to be a member of a group, the person should get a notice that someone wants them to be a member of a group and asks them if they want to be part of the group.

The above example may not be a perfect example of the dangers of being automatically added, but it does demonstrate the possibility of disaster.

Until Facebook changes it, you need to check what groups you are assigned to periodically to protect yourself.
