Do not delete partition with Windows CD

If you have a partition that is already existing on the hard drive you are installing windows on but do not want to keep the partition (if you are deleting Windows and starting fresh, it is recommended to delete the partition), you can delete the partition and create a new one. When you boot up with the Windows CD to install windows, you have the option to delete the partition. However windows CD does not properly delete the partition.

If you have deleted the partition using the Windows CD and then install Windows , you may not notice issues with the system at first but you will see the issues down the road. Remnants of the old partition still exists and it will affect the new partition and the install of Windows. This issue affects all versions of Windows up to and including Windows 10.

If you use Windows 10 to delete the partition before you install windows, and then notice issues, your only avenue to fix the issue is to delete the partition and start all over again.

There is several different utilities available that does a better job of deleting the partition. Here is two that I have used (Click on the hyperlink for information and to download the tool)

  1. Delpart (I have not used this tool in years. I cannot verify it is still good to use with newer systems. It did an excellent job when I have used it)

  2. Gparted (I have used this one recently and it works)
