Pop up will not let you close Edge

Microsoft Edge

Websites are getting hijacked. Some get hijacked because their security is not up to date. However even well protected sites can get hijacked. The hijackers are hijacking sites and putting executable files on the web page to activate when someone goes to that site. When you open that page, a pop up appears telling you of the virus. It either has you download a file or tells you to call a number.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FILE THE WINDOW WANTS YOU TO DOWNLOAD.

DO NOT CALL THE PHONE NUMBER IT TELLS YOU TO CALL.

If you have a pop up that will not let you close it and you are forced to exit forcibly (by going to task manager and closing the browser) The pop up may appear again when you reopen the browser.

This could indicate a virus on your system. It could also be a scam. See virus browser for more information on this. However this does not always indicate a virus or a scam. The owner of the website that you went to could just have bad code on their webpage or your system could have just hung.

It is a good practice however to run a virus scan on your system to be on the safe side. You can run the scan in the background while you are using the system.

To close the browser, do the following

Close the browser

  1. Close the browser window

  2. If it will not let you close the window, you will need to use Task Manager to close the window (click for instructions) NOTE: This is called force closing the browser.

Open the browser

If you couldn't close the browser without doing a force close, the browser will check to see if you want to restore the previous session.

Click the X, DO NOT RESTORE THE SESSION or that warning window will appear again will have to repeat the steps above.

However, for some reason, the browsers (Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome and others) doesn't always ask you if you want to restore the last session and just open your last session anyways. If this happens, you will be stuck in a loop.

Here is what you do in that event.

  1. Open the browser

  2. Hit the CTRL key and the F4 key on your keyboard as soon as you open the browser.

  3. If the pop up appears, you didn't hit the CTRL key and the F4 key fast enough. What you are trying to do is close the window before the pop up gets activated. There is not much time to activate the CTRL key and the F4. Chances are you will miss it several times before you finally close the window.

  4. You will need to force close the browser by performing the Close the Browser instructions above, and repeat opening the browser until you cancel the pop up

  5. Once you close the browser successfully and the pop up doesn't appear again, run your anti-virus and anti-spyware.
