Phishing

Scammers try to steal accounts. One way they do it is to have a website that looks legit. It will look like the actual website. You will think you are signing on to the actual website but you are actually signing on to a bogus site that records your username and password. Once they get that information, they can sign on to your account, install bogus software to spam others, change your password and do any other illegal activities.

Be sure you are signing on to the actual website. You need to make sure the actual website address is correct. Spammers will create websites that have a similar address, for example...

http://www.faceb00k.com (they are using zeros instead of the letter O)

http://www.facbook.com

http://www.facedook.com

and so on.

Also be aware of using shortcut links.  There is websites out there that will shorten a website address. Some addresses can get really long. for example

http://www.upgradenrepair.com/computerparts/CDROM/drives/cdrw.html

That can take a lot of typing and there is plenty of room for typing errors. There are websites out there that will shorten it. For example, Tinyurl and bity websites will shorten the address. The tinyurl will look like this

http://tinyurl.com/agwmxfs

The tinyurl will take you to the same place as the one above it but it is a lot shorter.

The danger with the tinyurl and other link shorteners is that you do not know if the link is safe. You don't know if it is actually taking you to the site above.  There is no way to verify it. Therefore, it can take you to a rogue site to steal your information. Unless you know it is safe, I would not click on one of them.

Also if you do get an actual link like http://www.upgradenrepair.com/computerparts/CDROM/drives/cdrw.html it can still take you to the wrong site. You can create a hyperlink that will say anything but the address take you elsewhere. You can do one of two things to verify you are going to the correct address

  1. Type in the address by hand in the address bar of the browser

  2. Put the mouse over the link. Not always but most of the time, a pop-up will appear showing the actual address.

If you go to a site that requests your password but it is not a log in page for a site you know is safe, do not give your password.

If you have gotten tricked to go to a site or you have given your password, Change your password immediately and run a scan on your computer. Here is info on checking for virus and spyware.
